Hailey birth story part I

I'm going to tell Hailey's birth story in parts. I want it documented so she can look back and see what we went through to have her! =o)

8/20/2008
I went on my daily 2 mile (sometimes 4 mile) walk at Crane's Roost and home to clean up for a couple minutes before my doctor's appointment. On this day I was 3 days past due. Even though I was huge and uncomfortable, I was planning to tell the doctor that I want to wait until the following Monday to induce, should he suggest it.

The nurses did a stress test and had trouble keeping Hailey's heartbeat monitored because she was moving around so much! After about an hour and a half of monitoring, the doctor saw me. Evidently my blood pressure was elevated (they checked it when I first came in and then when I saw the doctor) and I had protein in my urine. I was surprised because I hadn't had any problem so far! I was swollen but had that for weeks.

The doctor said I had pre-eclamsia and wanted me to go to the hospital immediately to get induced. I was only one centimeter dialated but I wasn't going to argue with him on that because I know pre-eclamsia can be dangerous if it goes too far. I called Sean and went home to get my things. Sean met me at home and we went to the hospital.

I was very excited gathering my things at home and calling my mom. Sean was on the phone and texting a ton of people. I ate a granola bar on the way to the hospital. Originally, I planned on eating something sufficient (cause they won't let me eat or drink there) but I was too anxious. Meanwhile, Hailey was quite calm at the time!

My mom and sister Stephanie arrived shortly after I got to the hospital. I was hooked up to machines and an IV which was pumping 3 or 4 different medicines into my body. I was receiving magnisium sulfate which made me SO sick. I mean abnormally, really bad reaction sick. It was terrible! Since I had this medicine, I had one nurse who was assigned to me and they came in very, very often to check on me. They still had trouble monitoring Hailey's heartbeat. They had to come in all the time and move the monitor to try and find Hailey.

My sister Stephanie had her laptop. Sean and I started blogging when we were in the hospital. That evening my dad came, sister Rachel and my best friend Sica (she drove all the way from Davenport!). I had a full room! Everyone just hung out, patiently waiting. They would go get food and come back. We all watched my stomach as Hailey rolled around, entertaining everyone. It was odd to have everyone just starting at me, like I was a ticking time bomb!

While all this is going on, Hurricane/Tropical Storm Faye is hitting Florida. We are getting pelted with rain and wind. Poor Amanda Voss is at Sean's and my home taking care of it and the animals with such nasty weather. There wasn't really a view out the window but everyone said it was crazy out there.

I had to take out my contacts because the medicine made my eyes red and burn. I turned red too and I was so very thirsty. My lips looked like I had red lipstick on cause I was so chapped. But all I could have was ice chips. Everyone kept on commenting on the ceiling fan in the room. Saying they have never seen a ceiling fan in a hospital room. I'm thinking it's for the people like me who get wicked hot from the medicine. I think I froze everyone out!

It was apparent that I was not going to give birth soon or during the night unless something changed very quickly. I was only dialated to 2cm. My in-laws came and brother-in-law to visit quickly before everyone had to go home. Sean and my mom stayed with me during the night. I'm glad they did cause I got very, very sick from the medicine during the night. I couldn't keep down ice chips. I tried to get up and go to the restroom but started to fall. I was just too weak.

I started begging the nurse to take me off the magnisium sulfate. She wasn't finding any protein in my urine (they hadn't the whole time I had been at the hospital) and my blood pressure was perfect. She found it odd that my reflexes were a little jumpy which I guess is another sign of pre-eclamsia. But she agreed that I could probaby go off an do fine. She said she would talk to the doctor.

The nurse also said that the magnisium sulfate tends to slow labor (that's one of it's uses) so it's actually working against the pitocin they are giving me. Uh-oh I thought, this is exactly what I wanted to avoid. Situations like this often end up in c-section. But I just pushed the thought out of my mind. I didn't want to think about it or even consider that it was a possibility. Besides, I hadn't even prepared for one cause I was determined to give birth naturally. I wouldn't become one of the statistics!

Tune in next time for Part II!

God never let's go!

This past Sunday we were singing a song at church called "You Never Let Go". I was thinking about when I was in the hospital laboring and then had the c-section to deliver Hailey. There were moments when I was very scared and the only real, constant, true thing I could hold onto was God. I had an "I know this but right now it's very real to me and out of my control" moment and realized everything else could fade away at an instant. All I could do was pray and have faith that God was holding onto me, and Hailey.

I praise God that He never let's go of me. I thank Him that He reminds me that He is there for me, even in the small things. It is the same for you too!! What an awesome God we have!

P.S. - I am working on Hailey's birth story in parts. Will post the first part in the next couple days!

Cry or Not to cry?

I just let Hailey cry herself to sleep. It was so hard! I had fed her and played with her. I needed to get up and get ready for the day so I put her in the swing. She was okay for a couple minutes and then started to scream. Her face was SO red and she was extremely loud. It's hard to make the choice when to let her cry and when to not. I'm still not sure of it. Hailey screamed for 15 min. and then went to sleep. But not before she did the quick air suck in thing that we all do after a big cry. My poor baby! I just wanted to pick her up and comfort her. But I know that she must learn and I will regret it later.

It's been busy around the Canada house lately. The days fly by so fast when I'm home. I don't get to do everything I would like to. I think of the things I would do with my time but now I'm taking care of Hailey. Hailey is definitely much more worth my time than those trivial things. It's an awesome feeling to do something with my time that means so much. The way Sean and I raise her will effect many people she meets in her life and her children. Sean has been so wonderful to help out with cleaning. He even shaved skittles the other night. Well, she isn't done.. looks quite funny actually. He had to quit cause she was biting him!

We have been very busy with work. We now keep our work schedule on a Google calendar so Sean can access it from his iPhone and I can from any computer. My in-laws are going to Indiana tomorrow. This means work will be much busier for Sean and I next week because my father-in-law will not be there. We praise God for every job that we get. We aren't slammed but we have work!!

My mom is deciding to get radiation. Please pray for her. She will be going for treatments five days a week for six weeks. I don't think she has a start date yet.

We bought a Nerf gun to hopefully keep the cats off the counters. I have tried so many things. Even packing tape put upside down... they didn't care!! I think cats are secretly really smart or something.

I have a big case of "mommy brain". I forget so many things or it's just on the tip of my tongue but I can't get it out! I've heard that Omega3 helps with that.

Couponmom.com is a great site if you want to combine coupons with sales the grocery is having. You can look up specific stores such as Publix, Winn-Dixie, CVS, Walmart and Walgreens and they have a list prepared for you that you can check off what you want and print it out. I love it!!

Why the Ellen Show is so funny!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C64ZYuR7PuQ

Hailey is 8 weeks old today!

I can't believe Hailey is 8 weeks old and how much she has changed since she was born. Even in the past week she has developed so much. She smiles and Sean and I when she sees us. It feels so good!! She coos more and more. It seems that she passes the rooting stage a lot and goes straight to crying. So I try to predict when she is hungry and go ahead and feed her. That is going quite well and keeping her happy. =o)

Hailey still isn't on an exact schedule yet for the day time. It depends what time the day gets started and she sometimes doesn't really take a nap or sometimes takes a couple long naps. I'm not sure how to get her onto a schedule. But I don't want to be really rigid with a schedule either. Just have an idea of how things are going to go and so she will know too. Our night time routine works well though. I feed her, swaddle her and rock her. Most of the time when I sit down to rock her, she knows it's bed time so she starts squirming and crying. She cries for a minute or two and then suddenly, it's like a switch, she is asleep. It's so cute!

Hailey is stil sleeping through the night with one exception. The other night she fell asleep really early and I didn't get to do the "top off" feeding so I expected her to wake hungry during the night. She woke at 3 AM but after I fed her for like 10 min. she went back to sleep.

This morning Hailey burped and coughed at the same time. It made her jump and her eyes got big! Lol! The other day she farted and it scared her. Yesterday I took her to one of her grandma's houses and dropped her off so I can go to work. It was the first time I have dropped Hailey off somewhere. It was difficult but the work day was so busy so it went by fast. Hailey's Mimi said she was terrific.

Yesterday was also Sean's 26th birthday! Poor Sean, it was such a busy work day and then he came home to change and go to youth group. I plan to give him a great relaxing weekend... well deserved!! =o) Sean also didn't get to open any presents on his birthday which I feel bad about. I was going to get him a bearded dragon but when I took him to get it, he decided he wanted to wait. Well, my present plan was busted then and I had to find something quick. I absolutely couldn't find anything at the mall. Hot Topic is normally an easy place to get Sean something but when I went in there, Hailey hated it. First her eyes were big. Then her face started to look pouty and then she started to cry. As soon as I left the store she was fine.

Sean's parents got him an iPhone but he has had that a few weeks now. My sister ordered him something and I did as well which isn't here yet. My parent's got him something but he has to wait till he sees them. It's like a prolonged birthday!

Dedicated Hailey today!

We dedicated Hailey today. I was trying so hard to keep her full and happy so she wouldn't cry when we went up there. I thought the dedication was at the beginning of the service so I had a bottle ready to make her plump just before we went up there. She finished the bottle, I found out the dedication was later in the service and then she wanted more to eat. I had to take her to the nursing room. I was sitting in there listening to the service when I heard them call us up there! Uh oh! Sean was waiting at the front of the church for us. When we got up there Hailey was all smiles and laughs! So precious!! I did good at not crying.. just a little tear in the corner of my eye.

We had the family over for dinner tonight to celebrate Hailey's dedication. I made a cake with white icing and sprinkles. We had london broil... delicious!

Yesterday Hailey and I joined some of the girls from church at the Southern Women's Show. We had a lot of fun. The main event there that we wanted to see was Jon & Kate from Jon & Kate plus 8. Here is a picture...

I valet parked at the Peabody hotel because it was right across from the convention center and safe, easy access with a baby. When the valet guy brought my car, he was strangely driving, like he didn't know where he was going and then ran my car over the curb! Then he started my car when I had already told him to go away and he burned my hand because it was right in front of the exhaust as I was picking up the stroller. Ugh! I was not appreciative of the valet guy there at all!!

Here are some pics that Rick took. Thanks so much Rick!!

At the Canada house...

I made it through one day of work! Hailey had many visitors while I was away and lots of food so I don't thibk he noticed I was gone. But when I came home she gave me lots of smiles and two loud coos! It's so heart warming when she does that. She is at the point that her smiles, laughs and coos are in response to us.

Hailey is liking tummy time a little better. That or mom and dad are more strongwilled than her and she knows just cause she has a "diva moment" doesn't mean we are going to pick her up right away. I must admit that is so hard to do though!

We have gone walking to Crane's Roost three times now. The first two times she slept but this morning she was awake, looking around and trying to talk. It was so much for her little eyes to take in! She so easily becomes fascinated when she sees things for the first time. It's adorable!!

Hailey loves to spend time with her daddy. She especially loves when he plays the guitar. The other day she was crying but Sean playing the guitar calmed her right down. But if he stopped she would start crying again.

This girl is gaining weight!! She eats and eats and eats. She is still small though. We think maybe she will be petite like Sean and I. Her face has gained a lot of features now. She doesnt have that newborn look. Her eye lashes are so long too!! She has lost hair nbut I see some growing back in. It looks dark.

Last night Hailey watched her first football game with her grandpa. Vikinks vs. Saints. It was a great game!!

I'm learning to do many things one handed,k it just takes me longer. Like my typing right now!

Going to work this week!

So I'm going back to work this week. I'm not working a lot of hours but it's time away from Hailey that we are both not used to. Both of the grandmothers are going to be watching Hailey. I'm glad they get some one-on-one time with Hailey and I know Hailey will love the attention!!

It's been two months since I have worked. I'm trying to mentally go there so I will be ready tomorrow. Run through the routines in my head so I'm not totally stumped when I get there at what to do!

I'm also trying to get back into the routine of keeping the house. It's different now because I can't just decide to get up and clean for an hour. I've gotta manage to fit the cleaning time in between taking care of Hailey. I think I'm going to have to resort to getting up earlier than her in the mornings to get some things done then too. I like this website, www.flylady.net They have a set of routines they suggest and they even have email reminders.

Hailey is so much fun! We took her to her first restaurant trip last night. She was really good for us. Here eyes were so huge as she looked around. It was so funny. They were almost bugging out they were so big! I wish I would have gotten a pictuer of it!!

My mother-in-law got us a camcorder so this coming week I will post some video of Hailey!! I can't wait to get her smiling on video... it's priceless. I just watched video of one of our friend's kids singing a song about God and the other kid doing karate moves in his spiderman costume. Even though I absolutely love the stage Hailey is at right now, so cute and small, I look forward to the days when she is jumping around singing about God too!!

Doctor Visit Day

Hailey and I both had doctor appointments today. I had my six week check-up with the OB and he said everything looks great. Sean is ecstatic. I pranked him... haha. I called him after my appointment and told him that the doctor said I have to wait 4 more weeks until I resume "normal" activity because my abdominal muscles were stretched so far. =o) He believed me! He was wigging out. lol.

Hailey is 9 lb. 2 oz. and 21 3/4 inches long. She is right where she needs to be on the chart. The doctor was impressed how well Hailey can hold up her head when she is on her stomach. Then the doctor was saying soon Hailey will roll over and I said she already is right as Hailey rolled over to show the doctor! The small bumps on Hailey's face and body is heat rash and will eventually go away the doctor said. Hailey had to get three shots. Oh my... her face turned purple. Her mouth was wide open, tongue quivering but no sound coming out. And then LOTS of sound came out! Oh my!! I'm sure everyone heard her throughout the building. My little girl has some lungs!
